Brice Marden: A Retrospective of Paintings and Drawings

Brice Marden: Painting with big brushes

(American, born 1938)

BRICE MARDEN: As you get older, your eyesight starts going, so you have a different sense of focus. By using long brushes you can follow what you’re doing, because you’re further away. It involves your whole body, and the image becomes some sort of replication of your body, even though it’s completely abstract.

I start with these long brushes, but then I go back in and I erase all my brush strokes with a painting knife, and I redraw the lines with the painting knife. So as I work on a painting, I’m seeing it from all these different distances.
