Brice Marden: How to look at painting

Curator, Gary Garrels: How should a person be looking at these paintings?

Artist, Brice Marden: They should start by being as far away as the painting is tall. Then you should look at the painting very carefully there and then certain questions should come up. So then you go up and look at it really closely, and just lose the whole idea of the rectangle, and just look at the surface, look at the marks and try and figure out what’s going on. And then go back to that original position. And then go back twice as far as height of the painting. It’s like a little dance. That’s always the way I look at paintings.
