I have been thinking in particular about this 1915 painting because the seemingly abstract composition is actually the view out of a window. Windows have taken on a new significance during this period of sheltering in place, whether it be joining the rest of New York City at 7:00 each night to clap and cheer out of our windows for the brave workers battling on the front lines of this pandemic, taking in the touching drawings and messages of hope posted in street-facing windows in my neighborhood during socially distanced walks, or simply watching my curtains sway in the wind or the changing colors of the sky through my window each night, thankful for another day.
