This painting brings me solace because the quiet streets today make me remember a simpler time growing up in the Lower East Side, when I would walk past tenement buildings and hear salsa music and the clanging of kitchen pots from the windows.

This work evokes a time from when I first moved to NYC, when the cityscape captured by Wong was a more familiar sight. The isolation of the figures is so evocative of what is happening today. The details—the inscriptions, pictographs, faux bois frame, and every brick—makes close looking at Wong’s paintings a joy.
