I fell in love with this glowing, fleshy, transcendental self-portrait at the 2014 MoMA PS1 Maria Lassnig retrospective, and I’m thrilled to see it on the walls of the new MoMA. In it, a nude, bald figure is rendered in loose, horizontal, almost woven strokes of acidy green, magenta, turquoise, and mauve. A rectangle floats above the mask-like face—evoking a veil, screen, or halo.
