The incorporation of short video clips highlighting performing artists on the fourth floor has been a delightful discovery for me, as a dancer. My favorites include Yvonne Rainer’s The Hand movie, which shows intricate movements of her hand from all angles, and is projected, appropriately, on a double-sided screen. Another short video shows a young Merce Cunningham dancing alongside others, with costumes by Robert Rauschenberg seemingly in conversation with Rauschenberg’s Canyon, on view in the same gallery. Lastly, there’s a gem of a piece with the balletic Alvin Ailey dancer Talley Beatty moving powerfully through different spaces and creating satisfying shapes, which seems to connect so well with Wifredo Lam’s The Jungle, just beside it.
