For only the price of an MTA swipe, Sol LeWitt lovers can enjoy the colorful, swirling ceramic tiles of Whirls and twirls (MTA) at the 59th Street-Columbus Circle Subway Station, between the 1 and A, B, C, D lines. Fifty-three feet wide by 11 feet high, and consisting of 250 porcelain tiles in a palette of just six colors, each aspect of the work was approved by the artist before his death in 2007. Mirroring the eccentricity of a New York City commute, this underground manifestation of LeWitt's artistic vision can be enjoyed by New Yorkers and visitors alike for decades to come.
