Ghana’s first national pavilion at the Biennale, designed by architect Sir David Adjaye, is a series of interconnected, oval-shaped galleries topped by a wooden roof inspired by traditional West African loam houses. One of the outstanding works here is Four Nocturnes, a three-channel film installation by John Akomfrah. He reflects on humanity’s destruction of the natural world, including the mass slaughter of elephants, with breathtaking footage of threatened natural land and marine environments.
