Lithuania won this year’s Golden Lion award for best pavilion at the Biennale for the irresistibly touching, even romantic opera/performance Sun and Sea (Marina), by theater director Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė, playwright Vaiva Grainytė, and composer Lina Lapelytė. The installation is a fake, indoor beach, where “vacationers” sporting swimwear relax on towels under umbrellas, scroll through their iPhones, peruse magazines, and sing tunes about climate change and the end of the world. It was delightful to listen to their requiem from a balcony on the second floor of a warehouse near the Arsenale, and think that perhaps this is how the world may actually end.
