Sheela Gowda’s exhibition Remains, Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan
A highlight of my trip was Sheela Gowda’s breathtaking exhibition Remains, housed in the industrial spaces of Pirelli HangarBicocca, a former manufacturing plant in Milan. On view is a wide selection of site-specific installations and sculptures made from 1996 through the present day, out of materials including metal tar drums, pigments, hair rope, wooden door frames, cow dung, incense, and rubber. Organized by Nuria Enguita and Lucia Aspesi, Remains highlights Gowda’s uniquely innovative approach—one that redefines the cultural resonances of incorporating ordinary materials into extraordinary forms.
