The Blue Angel claims multiple firsts in cinematic history: it’s the first of six collaborations between director Josef von Sternberg and Marlene Dietrich, the introduction of Dietrich’s trademark song “Falling in Love Again,” and Germany’s first feature-length “talkie.” Charting the transformation and downfall of a strait-laced professor (Emil Jannings) as he falls in love with the cabaret singer Lola Lola (Dietrich), The Blue Angel is a haunting exploration of morality, possessiveness, and corruption at the end of the Weimar Republic.
