Stern enlisted friends, family, and neighbors to model for her photomontages; her daughter, Silvia Coppola, was one of her most frequent models. For this photomontage Stern used an earlier photograph of Silvia in bed (on view in an adjacent gallery), recalling her early interest in sleeping heads from her ringl + pit days. Here, Silvia’s head is superimposed on the handle of a paintbrush that reads “Made in England.” After arriving in Buenos Aires in 1935, an expecting Stern returned to London to give birth to her first child in the country that had been her haven after she fled Germany. Shortly following Silvia’s birth, mother and daughter returned to Argentina.
