Marie Langer was a psychoanalyst born and trained in Vienna. After immigrating to Buenos Aires to escape the Nazi occupation, she became the only female founding member of the Argentine Psychoanalytic Association (APA), established in 1942. Stern, who first became interested in psychoanalysis in London, where she underwent treatment, had a number of friends in the APA, foreshadowing her own involvement with psychoanalytic projects. Stern always took several shots of her sitters in order to capture them from multiple points of view. This stark profile limits the viewer’s access to the sitter, shown in a moment of serene contemplation.
