In December 1945, Stern hosted in her home the second exhibition of Concrete art in Buenos Aires for a group of avant-garde artists who were having difficulty finding galleries to show their work. Within a year, many of these artists had organized themselves into Madí, a non-figurative art movement based on geometric principles. Arte Madí Universal (1948–1954), a magazine that promoted the group’s ideas, featured several photographs by Stern, most notably this outstanding photomontage, which appeared in the second issue and features Buenos Aires’s iconic obelisk. Stern also made portraits of the group’s members, including Gyula Kosice and Diyi Laañ, on view in this gallery.
