Auerbach presented this gender-bending scrapbook to Stern on her twenty-seventh birthday. Interweaving written notes and hand-drawn illustrations with pictures taken by the ringl + pit studio, Auerbach created a memento charting both practical and conceptual aspects of the studio and the tensions she and Stern experienced as independent business owners confronting traditional expectations of women. This special foldout page presents the two as the main attractions of a whimsical circus, where their costumes and poses allow them to confront and undermine expectations of gender and comportment.
