In October 1932, Coppola arrived in Berlin on his second trip to Europe. There he met Grete Stern through a friend, and she in turn introduced him to Walter Peterhans, who was then director of the photography program at the Bauhaus. Coppola enrolled at the school and remained a student there until its closure in April 1933, later claiming that he only took a total of eighteen photographs during this period.
