Upon seeing this photograph for the first time, Coppola’s friend, the writer Jorge Luis Borges, exclaimed, “¡Esto es Buenos Aires!” (This is Buenos Aires!). Coppola took the photo in the leafy, upper-class Belgrano neighborhood, zooming in on the architectural details of a building and its surrounding landscape, reflected in the puddles of a cobbled street. This photograph appeared in the fourth issue of Sur (on view in the vitrine to the left), the magazine founded by Victoria Ocampo that would later host the first exhibition of Coppola and Grete Stern’s work in its offices.
