This unusually cropped photograph with a dramatic perspective depicts the marble staircase leading up to the roof of the Coppola family’s home. It was published in the cultural journal Clave de Sol in 1931, inverted and as a negative image. Coppola served on the journal’s editorial board, along with musician Isidro Maiztegui, art critic Jorge Romero Brest, and historian José Luis Romero. Coppola also contributed writings to both issues of the short-lived magazine. His texts—a review of an exhibition of the painter Rafael Barradas, a piece on the distinction between modern and avant-garde art, and an essay on film in the United States and its historical and cultural contexts—point to his early interests in film and modernism.
