White habitually photographed his uptown community, taking pictures as he walked through the neighborhood. This snapshot captures a daytime crowd on West 125th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard in Harlem, running errands and window-shopping on the bustling street. The Apollo Theater, Harlem’s famed music hall that featured African American performers, appears across the street with a sign for an upcoming performance by singer-actress Pearl Bailey. On evenings out, White and his friends frequented the Apollo, especially to see Sarah Vaughn or Lena Horne perform.
