This photograph captures an intimate moment of domestic leisure. One of artist Ernest Crichlow’s sisters relaxes on a lawn chair, her child resting on her lap as she reads the July 24, 1952, issue of Jet magazine. Founded by John H. Johnson of the Johnson Publishing Company in 1951, Jet magazine was marketed as “The Weekly Negro News Magazine.” The issue pictured here centered on sociopolitical developments in the US and abroad. It also reported that Harry Belafonte, a close friend and collaborator of White’s in New York, was recently cast by MGM Studios to play a lead role in Bright Road, the 1953 film adaptation of Mary Elizabeth Vroman’s short story “See How They Run.”
