In 1951, the Whites moved uptown to Harlem’s Sugar Hill neighborhood, into a spacious two-bedroom apartment on West 148th Street and Riverside Drive. There was enough room for Charles to have a dedicated studio, host his mother Ethelene, and add a puppy to their growing family. Fran gave Toulouse, a blonde cocker spaniel, to Charles for Christmas that year. He took numerous photographs of the puppy posed on the master bedroom bed, and proudly told everyone that it was their “first baby!”
