Charles White was raised by his mother, Ethelene Gary Marsh, a domestic worker, on the South Side of Chicago. She always supported his interest in the arts, encouraging him to play the violin and providing him with paint sets and magazines to sketch from. Once Charles moved into an apartment with a spare bedroom in New York, he frequently had his mother stay as a guest with him and Fran.
