Puryear works primarily with wood—a choice informed by his travels and wide-ranging exposure to the carving and craftsmanship of artists and artisans of Sierra Leone, Japan, and Scandinavia. His sculptures evoke things that already exist in the world. As Puryear has explained, “I was never interested in making cool, distilled, pure objects.”
