“The portrait and its ideological uses have always been a point of departure for explorations of the current state of a society as well as changes brewing in it. In this process, both specific arrangements and adopted or even thwarted poses play a major part in turning the figures into characters or bearers of meanings. My imagery is of descriptive objectivity, and references such as fashion signal the pertinent codes: the figures themselves, through various strategies of refusal, staging, and personal specificity, insistently reject determinative readings of any kind.”
