Scene-maker Michael Holman moved seamlessly between the Uptown graffiti, breakdance, and hip-hop scenes and the Downtown No Wave set, where he performed alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat in the art band Gray. In conjunction with the multimedia performance The Subjective Gaze on March 12, this week celebrates Holman’s prolific moving-image career. The program spans iconic footage of the Rock Steady Crew b-boys, a teaser for Holman’s pioneering Graffiti Rock television project, avant-garde Super8 assemblages of street and creative life in lower Manhattan, and several narrative titles chock-full of atmosphere and narrative flair.
