The pioneering performance art at Club 57 often took the form of participatory, kitsch-inflected theme nights—celebrated this week with Super8 and video from such happenings as the James Bond Casino Royale evening, the headline-inspired Iran, Iraq, and Iroll, along with Playboy Bunny and burlesque nights. Over the course of its five years, the basement club saw a roster of artists from across the scene make use of its affordable space and lively audience, including performance artist Tom Murrin, whose object theater was recorded on one occasion. In its final year, 1983 (a turning point for gentrification and the AIDS-crisis alike), programming at the club took on a darker tone. Yet, as acts from Tony Heiberg’s “On the Town” revues demonstrate, it never lost its flair and wicked wit. Behold salty comedy by Rockets Redglare, beloved scene-maker Haoui Montaug singing “The Monster Mash” for a Halloween show, and more!
