Club 57’s tribute to Broadway masters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman continues. After their 57 shows, Shaiman and Wittman flourished in larger-scale productions starring Downtown superstars like John Sex and Holly Woodlawn. This week’s program brings these iconic shows to life via videographer Nelson Sullivan, a ubiquitous presence in period’s Downtown clubs whose distinctive backstage footage is a unique record of the scene. Ambitious production values are evident in the can-can number and Katy K petticoats that close the Danceteria sailor romp Nude Faces of 85, and Patricia Field’s fashions in the edgy Bye Bye Birdie at the Saint. The Sound of Muzak and The Disney Show, both staged at Limelight, are rollicking Downtown revivals from pop-cult classics that featured dozens of Club 57 alum.
