Dancer and choreographer Steve Paxton, Rauschenberg’s romantic partner at the time, lived with the artist for several years at 809 Broadway. Paxton was a founding member of Judson Dance Theater, and had met Rauschenberg while he was a dancer with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company from 1961 to 1964, Paxton founded the experimental dance ensemble Grand Union in 1970.
