Just a block north from the heralded Cedar Tavern, Rauschenberg and his artist and poet friends also gathered at Dillon’s Bar, located at 11th Street and University Place. Dillon’s was a “no frills” watering hole, an unglamorous alternative to the Cedar; it had no air-conditioning during the hot summer days in the Village. Patrons of Dillon’s did find cheap beers, a jukebox, and a Skee-Ball machine, as played by Jasper Johns in this photograph.
