In January 1977, Merce Cunningham Dance Company premiered Travelogue at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway. For Travelogue, Rauschenberg provided stage lighting for the performance, as well as draped hangings, chairs, and bicycle wheels for the set. For the costumes, Rauschenberg made hangings for the sets and props out of brightly colored fabrics, inspired by the Indian silks he saw during his travels in India in 1975. At some moments on stage, when the dancers extended their arms the audience saw Rauschenberg’s parachute-like fabrics fanning out from their tie-dyed leotards. John Cage contributed a score for Travelogue, with recorded telephone announcements, dial-a-thons, and bird calls; the musicians had phones on hand and a list of numbers to dial from the orchestra pit. Throughout the show, the audience heard a cacophony of these recorded sounds.
