John Cage and Jasper Johns assisted Sari Dienes in some of her large-scale rubbings of manhole covers and sidewalks, produced between 1953 and 1955. Johns later recalled, "After midnight, we would go out on Sixth Avenue and she would work…. I was responsible for keeping the sometimes enormous sheets of fabric or paper that she used from blowing away." One of these rubbings is seen behind Rauschenberg and Ann Winter in this photograph, taken in Dienes’s Sherwood Studio loft. The building was demolished in 1960.
