Working with a team of engineers led by Billy Klüver and Harold Hodges, Rauschenberg explored technology in large-scale works like Oracle, a sculptural installation constructed of salvaged metal parts, including a car door, a window frame, a ventilation duct, a washtub, a basket, and a staircase control unit. Rauschenberg, Klüver, and Hodges used wireless transistor circuitry that was cutting-edge at the time, embedding radios in each of the units so that they could transmit sound fragments pulled from the radio waves.
