Born in Nassau, Bahamas, 10-year-old Bert Williams immigrated to California with his family. Renowned as a vaudeville entertainer, here Williams gives a nuanced portrayal as the sympathetic romantic lead in Lime Kiln, the earliest known surviving film with a cast of black actors. Abandoned unfinished by its producers, the film was restored by MoMA in 2014.
