Lucas Samaras spent his early years amid the turmoil of Nazi occupation and the ensuing Greek Civil War, before immigrating with his family to New Jersey as an adolescent. After moving to New York, he began making assemblages like Untitled, composed of found detritus that Samaras has transformed into precious, semi-mystical objects that seem to salvage beauty from the rubble of civilization.
