Born in 1903 in the Russian Empire (in what is now Latvia), Marcus Rothkowitz immigrated to the US along with his parents and siblings in 1913, and became a US citizen in 1938. Just under a decade later, he would begin making sublime abstract canvases in this signature style, as a way of “expressing basic human emotions.”
