Shirin Neshat was born in Iran in 1957, and came to the US as a teenager to study. The outbreak of the Iranian Revolution in 1979 prevented her from returning to her homeland for over a decade. This two-channel video, made following her first trip back to Iran, is a poignant reflection on both the transformation of Iranian society after the Revolution, and the dual mindset created by life in exile. Her work has never been exhibited in Iran, but Neshat has been recognized internationally, winning best director at the Venice Film Festival in 2009.
