Polish-born Elie Nadelman spent time in avant-garde circles in Paris before World War I, and then left Europe for the US at the start of hostilities. In New York, he and his wife built a vast collection of American folk art, eventually founding a museum in Riverdale. This interest became a rich source for his own work.
