Roberto Matta was in Europe at the outbreak of World War II, and joined many of his fellow Surrealists in fleeing to New York City between 1939 and 1948. It was through Surrealists in exile like Matta—and works like this one—that many members of a younger generation of American artists became familiar with artistic representations of the subconscious.
