Born in Saigon, Vietnam, in 1960, An-My Lê left with her family in the last year of the Vietnam War (1975) and settled in the US as a political refugee. This photograph was taken in the California desert, where US Marines practiced military scenarios to prepare for deployment to another desert in the Middle East. Through her pictures, Lê provides a platform on which the moral and ethical questions of armed conflict can be raised.
