Born in Havana in 1915, where she studied architecture, Carmen Herrera spent the years around World War II in Paris, where she was exposed to international currents of abstraction. After settling in New York in 1954, Herrera defined her own mode of architectonic abstraction, working in combinations of straight-from-tube color. The black and white bands of this peaked composition balance rigorous structure with an optical playfulness.
