In the 1930s, Simone Forti and her family emigrated from Italy to the US via Switzerland to escape anti-Semitic persecution, settling in San Francisco. After moving to New York at the end of the 1950s, Forti began developing her Dance Constructions, dances based on simple movements and interactions with objects like rope and plywood boards, in which performers negotiate their movements in relation to the objects and other performers.
