Marcel Duchamp, a French-born artist who became an American citizen in 1942 and spent the last 25 years of his life in New York, made the components of his “traveling museum” in Paris. MoMA’s version of the Box, like most of the edition, was made in New York after Duchamp permanently relocated to the US; like the artist’s life, it was a transatlantic creation.
