Born in Latvia in 1938, Vija Celmins and her family lived as refugees in Germany throughout World War II and immigrated to the US in 1948. Celmins has said that this work, which pairs several rocks she found New Mexico with facsimiles cast in bronze and painted by the artist, aims to challenge viewers’ eyes “to open wider.”
