FREE CELL proposed a dynamic sculptural installation for visitors to gather underneath, around, and upon. Floating above the main courtyard, pneumatic “clouds” would provide cover while the sun is shining, and smaller inflated forms lying directly on the courtyard floor would create opportunities for relaxation and recreation. Inflatables consume a comparatively small amount of material, and because they are light, transport is relatively energy efficient. In addition to these environmental benefits, the design would be customizable to the natural conditions of MoMA PS1’s courtyard: in bright sunlight the balloons would be fully inflated to provide shade; later in the day, when the area has cooled, they would be deflated to allow more light to stream into the space. In the evenings, light-emitting diodes would illuminate the structure from within.
