Background:
To help Bourgeois prepare for what would be a major project entitled "The Puritan," the Director of Osiris Editions, Benjamin Shiff, provided her with test plates on which she made technical experiments. The entry for this work in Wye & Smith, under former catalogue number B2, documents four known impressions, with two in MoMA's Collection. An additional impression was located with the publisher, making five known impressions in all.
In 1994, the artist added a spider in ink over the compositions of three of the known impressions. Those three impressions were then titled "Spider."
