5 on fabric; and an edition of 25 on paper with 7 A.P., 5 P.P., 2 H.C., 1 B.A.T.
Impression:
Not numbered
Edition Information:
Within the fabric edition, 3 impressions are printed in black and 2 impressions are printed in red.
There are variations in the fabrics used in this edition, as well as scorching and staining, as is commonly found in the old fabrics Bourgeois chose to use as printing surfaces.
There are 3 known impressions of version 2, state III, outside the two editions.
State Changes and Additions:
Changes from version 2, state II in drypoint: female figure's hair and features further delineated; child's genitals and eye delineated; chimney-like elements filled in. Distress marks lightened slightly through inking and wiping.
Curatorial Remarks:
The plate dimensions of this impression could not be documented because this work is not in MoMA's collection and could not be examined in person. The plate dimensions given are from the published paper impression in MoMA's collection. Dimensions of fabric works often vary slightly due to stretching.
Publisher Harlan & Weaver groups the editioned state of this composition on paper with ten other drypoints of 1999, under the title, “11 Drypoints.” Each of the 11 compositions can be displayed individually. The full set is as follows: “The Accident” “The Angry Cat” “Don’t Put Your Foot in Your Mouth” “Fear” “Feet (Socks)” “Fences Are Obsolete” “Madeleine” “Mosquito” “Mother and Child” “Please Hang in There” “The Smell of the Feet”
Other Remarks:
Printer Harlan & Weaver does not recall the reason for making the very similar version 2 of this composition.
