The shapes of the aluminum collage elements vary across the edition. Several examples are reproduced below in the Evolving Composition Diagram.
There is 1 known variant impression of the only state, outside the edition.
The medium and location of the impression number and signature on the verso are not documented because this work is not in MoMA's collection and could not be examined in person.
According to Bourgeois's assistant, Jerry Gorovoy, the aluminum collage elements were fragments left over after pouring aluminum into molds for sculptures by the artist. Gorovoy gathered up the fragments and Bourgeois decided to use them in this edition. The sculptural pouring process took place at the Modern Art Foundry in Long Island City, NY.
