- Background:
- In 2009, Bourgeois began collaborating with Christopher Farr, a contemporary rug designer, to create her first and only rug project. The text in this composition was selected by the artist from a diary entry that dates to February 7, 1995. It also appears in the 1999 series "What is the Shape of this Problem?" included in the Related Works in the Catalogue below. Bourgeois wanted the text to appear in a dark, natural color, embedded in a field of off-white natural fibers. The rug was hand-woven in Morocco, and washed and finished in Switzerland.
Christopher Farr, who trained at the Slade School of Art in London, established his business for contemporary rug design in 1988. Together with his partner Matthew Bourne, Farr has collaborated with a range of artists, among them Gary Hume, Jorge Pardo, and Sarah Morris.
