- Edition Information:
- There are slight variations in the hand-dyed fabric across this edition because of the dying process and folding. For the purpose of comparison, an additional example is reproduced below in the Evolving Composition Diagram.
- Background:
- The Louise Bourgeois Studio refers to the Source work, seen in the Evolving Composition Diagram below, as a “drawing in fabric,” and to the editioned impressions as “facsimiles.” In order to conform to the formatting of this catalogue, that terminology has not been adopted here.
Bourgeois worked with Raylene Marasco of Dyenamix to create both the Source work and the edition. In the Source, the undulating compositional element in "Day" was cut from a pillowcase belonging to the artist. This element was digitally printed in the editioned impressions. The similar compositional element in "Night" was digitally printed in both the Source work and the editioned impressions.
The backgrounds in the Source work and in the editioned impressions were created with the Ombré hand-dying technique, which results in graduated coloring. The fabric was then folded to create diagonal bands and sewn in place. - Curatorial Remarks:
- The medium and location of the signatures and impression number are not documented because this work is not in MoMA's collection and could not be examined in person.
