3 known variant impressions of state V, outside the edition
Impression:
Not numbered
Edition Information:
Proof before the editioning of state V.
The "AP" inscription, in the artist's hand, does not represent a conventional A.P. impression, which would be numbered.
According to Publisher Harlan & Weaver, the 2 additional known impressions of state V, outside the edition, are printed in blue and dark blue. Both are inscribed "AP" in the artist's hand, but do not represent conventional A.P. impressions, which would be numbered. Images of those impressions are not available.
State Changes and Additions:
Changes from state IV, in open bite etching: background filled in.
Curatorial Remarks:
The signature on this impression shows the artist experimenting with the orientation of the composition. The published print (state V, in blue) will not be in this orientation.
The printer has confirmed that the background is open bite etching, which involves only acid and not rosin, which would be the case in aquatint.
The paper type could not be documented because this work is not in MoMA's Collection and could not be examined in person. The plate dimensions are from the impression in MoMA's Collection. The sheet dimensions were provided by the Louise Bourgeois Studio.
Although the numbering of this untitled work suggests that it is part of a series, it is not part of a larger body of work.
An umbrella merchandise item was made from an image of the published impression.
